The cardiovascular consequences of fatiguing expiratory muscle work in otherwise resting healthy humans

نویسندگان

چکیده

Fatiguing expiratory muscle work in otherwise resting humans elicits an increase sympathetic motor outflow; whether limb blood flow ([Formula: see text]) and leg vascular resistance (LVR) are affected remains unknown. We found that fatiguing resistive loaded breathing (ERL) did not affect group mean [Formula: text] or LVR. However, within-breath oscillations may reflect a sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction was counteracted by transient increases due to the mechanical effects of high intra-abdominal pressure during ERL.

Effect of expiratory muscle fatigue on exercise tolerance and locomotor muscle fatigue in healthy humans.

High-intensity exercise (> or =90% of maximal O(2) uptake) sustained to the limit of tolerance elicits expiratory muscle fatigue (EMF). We asked whether prior EMF affects subsequent exercise tolerance. Eight male subjects (means +/- SD; maximal O(2) uptake = 53.5 +/- 5.2 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)) cycled at 90% of peak power output to the limit of tolerance with (EMF-EX) and without (CON-EX) prior indu...

Expiratory muscle loading increases intercostal muscle blood flow during leg exercise in healthy humans.

We investigated whether expiratory muscle loading induced by the application of expiratory flow limitation (EFL) during exercise in healthy subjects causes a reduction in quadriceps muscle blood flow in favor of the blood flow to the intercostal muscles. We hypothesized that, during exercise with EFL quadriceps muscle blood flow would be reduced, whereas intercostal muscle blood flow would be i...

Inspiratory muscle work in acute hypoxia influences locomotor muscle fatigue and exercise performance of healthy humans.

Our aim was to isolate the independent effects of 1) inspiratory muscle work (W(b)) and 2) arterial hypoxemia during heavy-intensity exercise in acute hypoxia on locomotor muscle fatigue. Eight cyclists exercised to exhaustion in hypoxia [inspired O(2) fraction (Fi(O(2))) = 0.15, arterial hemoglobin saturation (Sa(O(2))) = 81 +/- 1%; 8.6 +/- 0.5 min, 273 +/- 6 W; Hypoxia-control (Ctrl)] and at ...

Effects of expiratory muscle work on muscle sympathetic nerve activity.

We hypothesized that contractions of the expiratory muscles carried out to the point of task failure would cause an increase in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). We measured MSNA directly in six healthy men during resisted expiration (60% maximal expiratory pressure) leading to task failure with long [breathing frequency (f(b)) = 15 breaths/min; expiratory time (TE)/total respiratory cy...

Expiratory muscle fatigue does not regulate operating lung volumes during high-intensity exercise in healthy humans.

To determine whether expiratory muscle fatigue (EMF) is involved in regulating operating lung volumes during exercise, nine recreationally active subjects cycled at 90% of peak work rate to the limit of tolerance with prior induction of EMF (EMF-ex) and for a time equal to that achieved in EMF-ex without prior induction of EMF (ISO-ex). EMF was assessed by measuring changes in magnetically evok...
